Story
Almost three years ago Cameron Young was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia. Friedreich’s Ataxia is a rare degenerative condition that causes nervous system damage and movement problems. The condition makes it difficult for him to complete day-to-day tasks and he can no longer walk without support. As the condition is degenerative, the effects will worsen with time. If Cammy goes untreated he will eventually be permanently confined to a wheelchair and could suffer loss of his sight and hearing. His condition will also shorten his life expectancy considerably. The diagnosis was life changing and has been very difficult for Cammy to come to terms with. Before he was diagnosed he was a very active boy, he played shinty with his local club and was in the army cadets. Cammy also worked in the forestry industry at abriachan forest trust and went to college for joinery. He loved both of these but sadly he had to stop as his condition got too bad to continue. Cammy is also a single father, to little two-year-old Leah. His ataxia makes it difficult to care for her. He often feels very fatigued causing him to take naps throughout the day and can’t take her out of the house without the help of another person. We have been in contact with a medical clinic in China that offers a new type of stem cell treatment unavailable in the UK, which would repair his damaged neural tissue and replace his degenerated nerves. This treatment would give Cammy the ability to walk again and make little tasks like walking to the shop or taking his daughter to the park possible again. The treatment’s effects are different on every person who undergoes it, but the benefits usually last for a few years at a time and improve the quality of life of the patient drastically. However, the treatment is expensive coming in at a total of $20,000 or £14,000. If Cammy were to receive this treatment it would change his life. He dreams of playing shinty again, being able to play more actively with his daughter without feeling such fatigue and living a more free and independent life. Cammy just wants to spend whatever time he has as fit, able and free as possible. We are hoping that some of the money for his treatment can be raised from the kindness of friends and strangers. We thank everyone that shares and donates from the bottom of our hearts.
