Story

What are we doing?

‘Breaking Ground’ is a challenge thought up by a group of engineers to help support and fundraise for The VC Gallery’s new project by the same name. Our goal is to collectively walk, run or cycle the perimeter of Wales 1027 miles/1653 km over 30 days (17th August - 16th September). To conclude the fundraising month a group of us will complete the ‘Fan Dance’ physical challenge (24km gruelling hike across the Brecon Beacons) used as part of the Fitness and Navigation phase of the selection process for the United Kingdom's Special Forces. To reach our mileage goal we need all the help we can get, so get your walking shoes or your helmet on, signup through the Strava link, donate and help us reach our mileage goal.

The ‘Breaking Ground’ project aims to help service veterans and those in the wider community by getting them engaged in safe social activities in the great outdoors through walks and metal detecting activities. We passionately believe this cause can improve health, wellbeing and overall quality of life particularly for those already in need coming out of isolation and the ongoing COVID situation. All money raised will go towards the day-to-day running and supply of equipment to help support the ‘Breaking Ground’ project.

Who are the VC Gallery?

The VC Gallery is a registered Charity based in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. We help service veterans and those in the wider community by getting them engaged in a variety of art projects. We passionately believe that art and culture can improve health, wellbeing, and overall quality of life. The VC Gallery was founded by Barry John MBE after his 24 years of service in the Army. With his artistic background and his involvement in mental health work, he realised the need in the community for his expertise and experiences. Now the VC Gallery is working with veterans, older people, children, and anyone who feels they need a time out to socialise and express themselves through art. Post-COVID the VC Gallery like many other charities have had to look towards moving work outdoors. The VC Gallery has plans to create an interactive outdoor project to allow veterans and the wider community to get together socially through walks, exploring local history and metal detecting activities. All donations via our fundraising challenge to help support this project are most appreciated.
