Weʼre raising £1,000 to create a memorial garden for 'born sleeping' (stillborn) babies in the old Folkestone Cemetery where they were buried without ceremony

12 days to go

Story

To create a special place for 'born sleeping' babies and babies left for dead on the beach or in the cemetery entrance - in an area of the old Folkestone Cemetery, where stillborn babies and found dead babies were buried during 1900's. In those days, without the understanding that mothers may need to see or hold their 'born sleeping' baby to allow them to properly grieve, these un-named babies would be quickly taken away, to reduce their mothers distress. There is no formal record of these babies and mothers were never told where their baby was laid to rest.

We have met with Chris T of the East Kent Baby Memorial Gardens charity and he has kindly offered to support our work in creating a White Garden (so-called because we will plant white flowering plants). Assuming agreement from the district council (FHDC), Chris has pledged to provide a wooden bench for visiting relatives.

My goodness, donations pop in every now and then, it is so heartening to know that this project is so well supported by local people, and people further afield. Jan

This morning Carole was interviewed on Academy FM Radio about our work in the cemetery, including the photography project and the White Garden too (the White garden, so named because we will plant shrubs with white flowers). Jan
