Story
The Black Merchant Seamen War Memorial is a sandstone stone memorial, It is situated in Falkner Square, Liverpool. The stone is from the Liverpool Seamen's Hostel with a bronze plaque dedicated to all the Black Seamen who served during World War II. It was unveiled in 1993 on the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic.
After several years of the plants around the memorial being overgrown by branches, a Facebook group was set up by local residents to raise awareness of it and have visitor and road signs installed locally. A celebration was held in August 2019 to mark the installation of the signs and increase awareness of the memorial.
I had no prior knowledge of this memorial and contacted the loca group to ask how we can support them.
The memorial is need of restoration and financial assistance is required to do so.
In order to raise money for this and raise awareness I will be walking from Liverpool seafafrers centre to the memorial on the 25th June which is also “The Day of the Seafarer” and hope to be accompanied by many individuals in order to raise awareness of this memorial and hand over the money raised to the committee for the restoration.
Please feel free to join us for all or part of the walk which is around 7 miles in total and will take in other Seafarer memorials along the way.
We will remember them.
