I've raised £8849 to Meet Bill. The Formally Fat Business Man who lost 14kg to climb Everest for CP.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common motor disability in childhood. Recent population-based studies report estimates of CP ranging from 1 in 400 children in UK and in Saudi Arabia 412 cases out of 99788 live births. CP is a group of disorders that affect movement and muscle tone or posture. It's caused by damage that occurs to the immature, developing brain, most often before birth. CP effects on function varies greatly. Some people with CP can walk; others need assistance. Some people have intellectual disabilities, but others do not. Epilepsy, blindness or deafness also might be present. CP is a lifelong disorder and is relatively common as evidenced by the studies above. There is no cure, but treatments and physical activities can help improve function.
My youngest stepdaughter (Annabelle) has this condition. Annabelle, with the continued support and dedication of her Mom is now able to walk short distances, go to school and live a pretty normal life; albeit some days it’s still not easy for her. Without her Mom and the continued private physio/treatments, I am sure she wouldn’t have achieved this. As a couple we are fortunate in that we are able to support her. There are many who don’t have this opportunity. What I have learnt about disabled people is that they want to be part of something and live a life as normal as they can be. They want to work, be independent and for some, have the ability to compete in a sport.
So why this mail? Well I wondered if you could help. On the 22nd April 2023 I am heading off to Everest for a trek that my wife purchased for a special birthday. (and before you ask it wasn’t my 28th). I have been in training since August 2022, lost 14kg and determined I will get there. And before you ask, I am insured! At the moment, I am not going to the top but my target is base camp. Its at 5634m above sea level i.e. about 18500ft. Or simply 3.5miles. I want to raise $8849 which is the height of Everest in meters. Feet would be nice at US $29,032 but I understand there are lots of deserving causes in the world. So hence the US $8849 target.
I am currently living and working the majority of my time in Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom has given to many of us on this mail throughout our careers in oil & gas, that I have decided to split all donations on a 50/50 basis. Why? Because CP is one of the major causes of disability in Kingdom.
For the UK, I will be giving 50% of what is raised to Gloucester Athletics Track Management Ltd (Charity Reg 1148969). This is because they support Frame Running. This is an adapted sport for young people who cannot functionally run and rely on sports aids for mobility and balance. A Frame Runner is a three wheeled frame where the young athlete is supported by a saddle and body plate. The young athlete propels against the frame using their feet, and steers using the mobility within their hands and/or arms. People with CP take part in Frame Running as a recreational activity. Its a very effective way of improving overall fitness, strength and physical and emotional well-being. Frame Running is an athletics discipline, governed by for example, England Athletics and delivered by athletics clubs such as Gloucester. Bob Purcell, one of the charities directors, has dedicated so much of his time to help young people with CP and is coaching, has enabled many compete for team Great Britain. It’s a small charity but does so much good.
For Saudi Arabia, I will be giving 50% of what is raised the Association of Disabilities (Efaa) at the Prince Sultan Rehabilitation Centre. Efaa is a non-profit organization that provides a comprehensive model for people with disabilities in the Eastern Province; including those with CP. I had the privilege to visit their complex recently and was provided a tour by the CEO Rana Taibah and her team. The work they particularly do with young children via their educational and sports development programs is an invaluable contribution to the local community. Efaa also encourages the development of skill sets so that the children develop a sense of worth with via art and handmade products.
So no matter how big or small, I would really appreciate your help. I intend to do a daily blog of my progress (if I can maintain communication) which will no doubt be difficult in some parts. There will be plenty of photos of mountain scenery, some ugly unshaven selfies and hopefully the odd video or two with some Black Country chatter. Watch out for the link.
Thanks so much for reading and hopefully your kind support.
