Story

This year, 2021, marks the 50th anniversary of our beloved theatre!

The building that is now known as "The Belfrey Theatre" was originally part of the Prince's Street School, a Victorian school with a long life from 1858 until 1970. When the school closed, a new lease of life was given to the site by the Belfrey Arts Trust, who purchased the buildings from the local Authority for just £1. There is now a thriving collection of community groups at the Arts Centre, including; The Wrekin Arts Photographic Club, Sharon's Pottery School, The Ceramics Studio, Telford Makerspace and of course the Belfrey Theatre!

The Theatre is housed in what used to be the Infants school. In "Memories of Early Schooldays" by Allan Frost, there an account from a former pupil who states "The rain came in through the roof."- So it hasn't changed that much!

The Belfrey Theatre is home to Wellington Theatre Company, the Belfrey Players and a thriving youth theatre. Our final performance before the pandemic hit was our Pantomime "The Little Mermaid", which saw a cast and crew of over 60 participants from the local area.

To mark our 50th Anniversary of being at the Belfrey, as well as an apt return to the stage after the various lockdowns, we would love to treat the building to some work. Namely fixing the roof and refurbing the toilets, as well as new carpets in the auditorium and corridor that were subject to flooding over the winter!
