Story
To commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain we are running a total of 80 miles in just 5 days. Our route will see us run between 16 significant Battle of Britain Fighter Stations and locations in the UK. These being:
Day 1: Duxford - Fowlmere - Debden
Day 2: North Weald - Hornchurch - Biggin Hill - Kenley - Croydon
Day 3: Uxbridge - Northolt - Bentley Priory
Day 4: Westhampnett - Tangmere
Day 5: Manston - Hawkinge - Capel le Ferne
Our objective is to raise as much awareness as possible, in this poignant anniversary year, for the courageous 'Few' - the young men who defended Britains skies during 1940 from the relentless German Luftwaffe and an inveitible invasion. There is now just only one known surviving aircrew alive from this historic Battle, Gp Cpt John 'Paddy' Hemingway DFC, who turned 101 in July. In tribute to this hero, alongside all of his comrades, we hope to continue their memory by raising much needed funds to support both the National Memorial to the Few at Capel-le-Ferne, and the Kent Battle of Britain Museum Trust at Hawkinge, who receive no public funding. Particularly with the impacts of Covid on them opening their revenue streams have been severely impacted.
With just under 3,000 RAF aircrew who served during the Battle of Britain, between the 10th July - 31st October 1940, we hope to raise a minimum of (and hopefully well exceed) £3,000. £1 for each of these brave young men should not be a hardship. More than 540 would lose their lives during this period with many others either badly injured or maimed, or who would not see the end of the war. The Battle of Britain was a hugely defining point in world history and enabled the platform for the liberation of Europe, the defeat of the Nazi regime and the preservation of world freedom.
We greatly appreciate any support and anything you can afford to spare and are hugely grateful to the various locations and operators who have offered to facilitate and support us both before and during our route. These include: Historic Aircraft Collection, The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Shuttleworth Collection, Aircraft Restoration Company, Fowlmere Airfield Museum, North Weald Airfield, Hornchurch Aerodrome Historical Trust, Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar, Biggin Hill Memorial Museum, Kenley Revival, The Battle of Britain Bunker, Bentley Priory Museum, Boultbee Flight Academy, Tangmere Military Aviation Museum, Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Museum, The Kent Battle of Britain Museum and The Battle of Britain Memorial.
Thankyou

4 years agoThe amazing donations have seen us smash through the latest target of £5,000 ahead of Monday and the start of our run. Huge thankyou to everyone who has continued to support us, bought auction items or kindly donated! We've now stretched this up to £6,000 and hoping that we can keep it going. Thank you

4 years agoWe continue to pay our respects & lay RBL Memorial Crosses at the resting places of the 'Few'. To date we have laid 123 crosses across 12 different counties, with plans to lay 30-40 more either before or during the run. It is likely to see a longer term project to commemorate as many of the 'Few' as possible. A different individual is shared on social media each day, and will be up to Oct 31st - it is hoped it will connect people through seeing the young faces & reading the breadth of stories, heroism, ages & nationalities of those involved

4 years agoThe hugest honour we have received is to have the support & backing of the last known surviving member of the Battle of Britain 'Few'. Group Captain John 'Paddy' Hemingway DFC AE is now 101 and living in Ireland. John flew during both the Battle of France &the Battle of Britain with 85 Squadron, incredibly shot down 4 times and survived. It's such a privilege to have one of the heroes we run for to be supporting us. We sent John a running t-shirt which he kindly posed for! Not that we needed any further motivation - but is hugely humbling.
