Story
Barnes Inclusion Alliance (BIA): Championing Diversity and Inclusion within the Barnes Primary Community
We do not live in a bubble. You can’t think, ‘that will never happen here’ because these things do happen, and communities need to know how to respond to them. This racist incident is not isolated and highlights there is work to do in relation to race and diversity in our Barnes community...
‘Whilst walking to Vine Road Playground with my 5-year-old daughter, we were accosted by a dozen boys aged 10-11 in the pathway alongside the railway tracks. They started hurling racist abuse at us and were very intimidating. I have subsequently reported the incident to the police and also shared with the local Barnes community and parents at Barnes Primary. We have had great support from the community, several of whom have shared their own experiences of being targeted in this way. As you can imagine, we have been left shocked and heart-broken by this incident. The fact that the perpetrators were so young has really exposed the need to do much more in addressing the issue of race and diversity amongst young children and in our broader community.’
Out of this negative incident, a positive new initiative has emerged, The Barnes Inclusion Alliance, to promote diversity & inclusion as a core value for Barnes Primary School and wider community – allowing every child to thrive in an inclusive environment.
The Barnes Inclusion Alliance, parents, and teachers, will work together across three pillars:
Education – Focusing on building more awareness amongst parents, teachers, students and in our Barnes community.
Representation – Actively seeking diverse representation across the school curriculum, in school leadership, in mentors and speakers, in resources and teaching materials.
Communication - Engaging our community and all stakeholders in a broader conversation about diversity and inclusion and the type of future we want for our children.
Funding will support professional diversity and inclusion training for staff and students, diversifying the school’s resources and materials for more representation, enhanced recruitment efforts for school leadership and teachers to reach diverse candidates, activities and social events that promote diversity and create a palpable sense of inclusion for all!
