    Story

    This is not a playground...

The concrete area in the picture is where children between the ages of 3 and 4 are having their daily playtime. It doesn't look much fun for children at an age where they should be inspired by their surroundings.

Each moment of joy is small, but over time, they add up to more than the sum of their parts.

We want to change this and have taken inspiration from Designer Ingrid Fetell Lee who studies joy and reveals how we can find more of it in the world around us. Ingrid studies the relationship between our environment and our emotions, and shares her thoughts of inspiration for living a more joyful life through design. We want to take this inspiration and create a joyful playing area for the young children of William Harding School.

Ingrid put forward a simple, powerful idea: that our greatest source of joy is the world around us.

Deep within us, we all have this impulse to seek out joy in our surroundings

    This will become a playground...

We are raising funds to turn this dull concrete children's playground into something more inspiring and joyful. We are committed to doing the work but we need support to raise some funds to create a joyful space.

when psychologists use the word joy, what they mean is an intense, momentary experience of positive emotion -- one that makes us smile and laugh and feel like we want to jump up and down

The funds will go towards paints and outdoor toys that will create a more fun environment.

We want to introduce colour to the playground in a number of different ways.. We are planning to add a race tack, footprints for following, number hopscotch, rainbow coloured fencing, a sensory banging wall and much more.

The Mothercare toy team have kindly donated a number of toys for us to build and install, including an outdoor kitchen, mats and rockers, etc

We have worked up a plan:

And tried to visualise how this new space could look:

Where joy hides and how to find it ...

On the most basic level, the drive toward joy is the drive toward life.
