Thank you for coming on to our JustGiving page for Tom Lazarides's road to recovery.
Our team at A Wilson Roofing really want to get involved in raising money and awareness for Tom and his fight, here is why:
We were shocked and saddened to hear the news that Thomas Lazarides (Tom/ Laz) had been involved in a life-changing accident. When diving into a swimming pool in June, he fractured his neck in two places and sustained a serious spinal cord injury. Airlifted to an intensive care bed at King's College Hospital in London, he could breathe only with the assistance of a ventilator. Whilst in hospital, things took a turn for the worse as he contracted rhabdomyolysis, which began to eat away at his muscles; which has slowed his recovery considerably.
Tom is now able to breathe unaided and beginning to recover but has a very long, slow journey of rehabilitation ahead of him. Tom is an outstanding sportsman and a wonderful friend to many. However, aged just 20 years, Tom now faces the very realistic possibility of being discharged to a care home, with no realistic path to recovery on the NHS, and limited access to physiotherapy – there is no current recovery path for him.
At this stage it is unknown what kind of recovery he will make. His spinal cord isn’t entirely severed and therefore there is every reason to be optimistic about his potential for recovery and for him to go on and lead the life he was so excited about. However, to do this he will need a lot of care, rehabilitation and physiotherapy. His family and friends were shocked to find out that he wouldn’t automatically get a bed in a rehabilitation centre, and if he does his rehabilitation will be limited. Although Tom has a great support network around him with two older brothers, a younger sister, his friends and loving parents, his motivation and determination can only take him so far. It is essential he receives the medical care that can help him get the most movement back as possible.
So, A Wilson Roofing are teaming up with Lucanu Construction Ltd and Surrey Building Projects Ltd, and for every one of our projects accepted, we will be donating to help Tom on his extremely important road to recovery.
