Story

My son, Calum has Autism and PDA, which comes under the Autism umbrella. This does not define Calum by any means, but it does raise difficulties for him in every day life. In fact, getting through a day can create enough challenge for him. We take so much for granted because the things we do, the processes we go through, etc, are natural. For Calum these processes are complex and create all sorts of emotions and stress. There is nothing harder than seeing your gorgeous boy having a melt down, struggling to cope with what's around him. Becoming unable to speak because the feelings inside him are so intense and he just cant make sense of them anymore. However, when he tells you he loves when you put him to bed, it makes your heart melt every time, because you know it is genuine. When he runs up and throws his arms round you and gives you a big kiss, it makes everything else disappear. Calum has an amazing sense of humour, once you get to know him and can be very kind. He knows himself he has Autism and we wanted to help support NAS by continuing to raise awareness. Everyone who has autism is different, in fact, it can change, not only on a daily basis but an hourly or minute to minute basis. It is so complex. The more people who know about it and have even a little understanding, will go a long way to supporting people like Calum. Removing any stigmas and judgements, allowing opportunities to come their way.
