Story

A Private Pilot's Licence for a Young Woman to Start a Career in Aviation

Created by Aetheris Publishing and supported by the new book Attagirls and the upcoming feature film, the Attagirls Molly Rose Pilot Scholarship (AMRPS) is an initiative to encourage young women to consider a career in aviation and particularly as a pilot. Now in its third season, the scholarship awards training for a full Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL) to an individual who has demonstrated an interest in flying as a career.

To-date, two young ladies have completed their PPL as a result of the scholarship.

The scholarship is named after Molly Rose (neé Marshall), the heroine aviatrix whose incredible life story inspired the book and film Attagirls, which are based on her time in the Air Transport Auxiliary (‘ATA’) during World War II. Molly was not afraid to embrace any challenge and she achieved her pilot's licence whilst still a teenager. We hope that Molly's story will inspire other young women to learn how to become a pilot.

We are extremely grateful for the support of Marshall of Cambridge which provided funding the first and second scholarship. Marshall of Cambridge was founded in 1909 by Molly’s father and is a private, family owned group. The company also owns Cambridge Aero Club which was founded in 1930 by Molly Rose’s brother Arthur (later Sir Arthur) Marshall. Cambridge Aero Club is providing the PPL training.

The Attagirls Molly Rose Pilot Scholarship is managed by a Board of Trustees whose intention is to develop the initiative in the coming years to offer opportunities in the commercial sector, encouraging more sponsorship and donations together with corporate involvement in the world of aviation. The Board is responsible for creating the framework within which the scholarship operates and is collectively responsible for its direction, promotion and oversight, ensuring its long-term success.

Our fundraising campaign will ensure that this scholarship continues long into the future, offering other young girls the opportunity to step onto the aviation career ladder, and to change the female-to-male ratio of a profession which is currently male-dominated.
