Story

Our Story

In October 2024, our vibrant 16-year-old son Arlo, a compassionate and fun-loving teenager, faced an unimaginable challenge: a diagnosis of Grade 4 brain cancer. What began as a minor headache quickly spiraled into hydrocephalus, emergency neurosurgery, and a daily regimen of radiotherapy and chemotherapy in Southampton. For any parents reading this you will know how heartbreaking this news has been for us, Arlo, his younger brother and family.

Despite the immense weight of his diagnosis, Arlo’s spirit shines brighter than ever. His unwavering positivity serves as a beacon of hope for all who know him. When asked about his cancer journey, he simply said, "I don't want people to be sad. I just want to be happy in the here and now, because that's all there is." Arlo is determined to embrace every moment, focusing on the joy of being with friends, enjoying pizza nights, watching films, going to college, and dreaming about the mountains and football matches.

What the Funding Will Be Used For?

Arlo is currently under the care of the NHS, and is recieiving incredible, compassionate care. But when he has finished radiotherapy, some of the best treatments for his rare condidtion, unfortunately are not covered by the NHS and cost upwards of £10,000 per month. Having already depleted our savings and being unable to work while caring for our son, we are reaching out for your support to help us cover the significant burden of his medical expenses and travel to hospitals. This assistance would allow us to focus solely on Arlo, and his younger brother, rather than worrying about finances.

Arlo dreams of living life to the fullest and experiencing the fresh air of the mountains with his family and friends. For him, being in the mountains symbolizes a connection—a source of hope, strength, and energy.

Donations, Small and Large

When people ask how they can help, we have struggled to find the right words. We are facing difficulties and concerns about finances—but with small donations from our community, we can help Arlo continue to live happily in the face of adversity.

We fully understand the challenges posed by the cost-of-living crisis and the rising ferry costs. Your contributions will assist with his treatment and help us create joyful moments that uplift his spirit.

Please consider donating to help us fund both his clinical and emotional treatment. Let’s show Arlo that even in tough times, there is a community standing with us. From Arlo's home on the Isle of Wight to individuals around the globe, have provided us with incredible community spirit up to this point, and we are grateful for any further support you can offer.

Thank you for your kindness and support.

Alex (Wo), Ellie and Hector x

As a family we are focused on Arlo, his care and his brother, but if you have any questions you can email arlojourney@gmail.com

Update 2 of 2 - Many of you donated for Arlo to get to the mountains. Through the kindness of new friends, Arlo was gifted a week in the Alps and your generous support ensured that he could travel with the necessary medical cover to fully enjoy his time, and he really did.

Update 1 of 2 - We’re starting again with deep thanks for all your incredible help. Because of your support, Arlo has been able to collect his second batch of medication from Paris. He’s had a few new symptoms to get used to but he’s continuing to smile and is really enjoying the wonderful normalities of life. Here’s a picture he took at one of his favourite places, mucking around with his friends.
