Story
Arlesey, a small village in Bedfordshire launched an ambitious project to commemorate the centenary of WW1 by laying a poppy cross on the grave of every serviceman listed on the village war memorial in 2014. We were incredibly successful over 300 community members got involved visiting 87 graves spanning 7 countries we even created a full length documentary of our project which was broadcast on TV.
Inspired by the Woodland Trust we promised to create and plant a memorial copse as a lasting legacy of the project. The copse will provide a sanctuary of remembrance, contemplation and hopefully will smarten up a bit of the village that is currently a wasteland. The town council has given us some funding to start the project. We have the trees, and a design, we also have appointed Amenity Trees to do the work and the town council will maintain the copse - however if we are to realise our original plan of including a monolith with some inscriptions from the letters the soldiers sent home and to have some seating - we need a little bit more. The Copse will open in November (hopefully) in time for Remembrance Sunday and already Gothic Mede has committed to involvement with its opening and I'm hopeful further community groups will get involved too.
Please give even a small amount and share the page with your friends, family and other Arlesey residents.
Thank you for your continued support and lets finish this project in style with a legacy that future generations can enjoy too!

6 years agoWe have in the last couple of weeks received some generous donations from local businesses, councils & individuals. As such we are now able to realise the plan of having an inscribed monolith is situ by (hopefully) the opening, complete with seating and information plaque. Thank you all for your continued support. Also, there will be a special remembrance service at St Peter's at 6:30pm on the 11th. Vivace Choir will be singing and 10 descendants of Arlesey men will read from letters they sent home. We hope to see you there.

6 years agoIts all go at ARY HQ today, landscaping work on the memorial copse has begun this week and thanks to your generous donations we've been able to appoint a local craftsman to produce 2 bespoke memorial benches in time for the opening at the end of November. The third bench and the monolith still require a bit more funding, but I'm so pleased its all happening now! Follow the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ArleseyRemembers/ for updates on the small opening event which will happen at the end of November. Thank you. Jodie

7 years agoTrees are home to more wildlife than any other landscape. Hedgerows, copses, woods, and parkland have a unique character, biodiversity & ecosystem. Together they make up vital habitat helping species to survive and thrive. So our new memorial copse will be a great place for the community to enjoy and to honour the memory of those lost in WW1, we'll be encouraging Arlesey biodiversity and creating wildlife habitat. Thank you for your donations so far please share the link with your friends and lets see if we can get a few more today. : )

I'm one small part of the Arlesey Remembers You project. I documented the commemoration of the beginning of the centenary producing a film about the volunteers. Now in its closing stages I'm hoping the project can mark the end of the centenary with a memorial copse.
