Appleton with Eaton: A community through time
The Appleton with Eaton History Group’s historical map was displayed in the village hall at last June’s Jubilee celebrations. The next step is to raise the funds to mount the map beside the War Memorial on a durable lectern. To stand the test of time it must be printed on a metallic surface, mounted in a strong steel frame, and set in a concrete base. The overall cost, from design to completion of the associated website, will be approximately £5000. Half this sum has already been raised thanks to the generosity of a small number of individuals.
With the support of the Parish Council, the History Group would like the map to serve as Appleton’s tribute to seventy years of service by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with a fund-raising campaign from within the community. We need to raise a further £2,500, which will cover the balance to mount the lectern, and eventually construct a website describing walks around the community. Any surplus when the campaign is finished will be made over to causes identified by the Parish Council as worthy community projects.
It is usual for gifts to vary in size and we hope everyone will feel able to join in. There will be an acknowledgement board in the Hall, and a note on the map itself marking the community’s contribution. Beyond Appleton’s gift to the Queen’s memory, the map will help everyone, and perhaps most notably young people, to develop an awareness of the roots of the very local parts of their community, why it is where it is, how it has grown up, and what it offers them. For more information on the work of the History Group in helping develop this awareness please visit the Group’s pages on the village website:
