Story
My name is Andy. Until 2015 I was a self-employed Landscaper working and living with my family in Leicestershire.
I was taken ill in early 2015 with a pretty nasty infection that found it's way into my body via a suspected spider bite on my ankle. Much has been made of the bite but the reality is that I probably scratched the bite site with dirty hands and introduced the infection myself.
The infection caused Sepsis and Kidney Failure, it also introduced Lymphedema into my system which caused my right leg to swell to approximately twice the size of my left leg. I spent 3yrs trying to find a solution but eventually decided that the only way I'd get back to work would be to have the limb chopped off.
I had my right leg amputated on March 13th and returned to surgery, following another infection, on April 27th. I'm now well on the way to recovering but have come across yet another problem, in the form of my garden! My kids love to run around on the grass and, in weather like we're currently experiencing, love splashing around in their paddling pool. I can't get out there with them because I'm now confined to a wheelchair and the garden just isn't suitable.
The paths are too narrow, there is a raised deck that I can't use, my wheels won't go over the lawn due to the slopes (hence I installed raised decking when I was able-bodied) and I'm stuck in an area that measures (approx.) 1.5m x 1.5m... Worse than that, my workshop, the way I intend to make money when I'm able, is on the other side of the garden and also sits atop a raised deck. It's not big enough for my wheelchair and is designed to for a 6'5 who works standing up, not a bloke in a wheelchair.
I'm raising money to get the garden, and my workshop, sorted out. I need a level-access garden and a new workshop. I think I can do this, and with your help I will.
Thank you.

7 years agoThe media spotlight has moved on and the hoopla has died now. The story of my leg has gone all around the world, and donations have come in from all around the world as a result - now that things have died down I thought it would be a good time to say thank you to each and every person who has helped with the total. It seems likely that we'll miss the target but if that's the case then so be it, we'll use what we have and we'll be grateful. Thank you all so much for your help. You have no idea what it means to our family. Andy & Christine X

7 years agoHello, guys. Christine and I are totally overwhelmed by your collective kindness. The story of my leg has now gone around the world and I've been contacted by television and radio people too. The story that appeared in the national/world press was nothing to do with me. I spoke to a local paper to see if they could help but they syndicated the story. To set the record straight, we have not been given one penny by any of the online sites or newspapers, someone got paid but it wasn't us. Thank you, I can't say it enough times. Thank you!
