    Story

My niece Lizzie was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was just 5 years old. The following is an account of Elizabeth's story from my brother:

'She was originally on insulin injections, but very soon after diagnosis we were invited to take part in a clinical trial where she had a 50/50 chance of being placed into a pump group or an injection group. We got the insulin pump, which she has kept following the end of the trial. The pump delivers a constant 'basal' level of insulin. We can also give bolus amounts when she eats anything with carbohydrate in it - pretty much most things.

It's amazing how ignorant some people are of type 1 diabetes (even some doctors, actually). It is an autoimmune disease, which anybody can develop, unrelated to Type2 and nothing to do with diet. Someone asked Suzanne once at the hospital what condition Lizzie had while they were waiting for their appointments. Suzanne told her Type 1 diabetes and the lady said 'ahh, did she eat too many sweets when she was younger?''

I am currently trying to raise the awareness of type 1 diabetes through Cycling. I am competing in as many Cycling sportives as I possibly can all whilst wearing the JDRF (Junior Diabetes Research Fund) cycling kit. In September I will be taking my awareness abroad and riding from Venice to Rome in Italy through the mountains, 400 miles in just 4 days!

All the money I raise is being split between helping to fund Lizzie's treatment and donations to JDRF who not aim to cure Type 1 diabetes but also carry out research into making new drugs and equipment to make it easier to live with.

So far Lizzie herself has raised over £1000 for JDRF and Diabetes UK - she did a charity walk in Oxford university park a couple of years ago and also they had a Type Onsie day at school where all the children paid £1 to come to school in their onesies and pyjamas, which was very funny to see.

Please help a brave young girl defeat this terrible disease. Thank you.
