    Story

    Kilembe - floods and covid

In the heart of Africa, the Rwenzori Mountains a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are home to Bakonjo tribe who from the earliest days provided guiding and porter support to travellers, scientists and mountaineers wishing to explore the range .

In May 2020 some of the heaviest rains on record hit the Rwenzori and huge floods roared down the valleys. Bridges were swept away, as were schools, a hospital and many houses. At the same time the covid pandemic hit the communities hard as tourists stopped coming to the mountains.

John Hunwick has, with your help over the last few months, employed locals and rebuilt a health centre, mountain camps, bridges and trails. With a drop in tourism many locals have turned to poaching partly to feed their families and partly as the lack of rangers, visitors, guides and porters in the mountains have made their work easier. As a result many animals have been killed and the red forest duiker is now in danger of being wiped out in the Rwenzori.

Money donated will be used to buy materials and food to employ locals to continue rebuilding the tourist facilities and trails on the mountain, but also he has created an anti-poaching unit which includes to UWA rangers. These people have already destroyed 600 snares and arrested 2 poachers. We need $1200 per month to keep this unit operational.

Thank you for all donations to date - without them the situation here would have been disastrous - as it is a lot of good work has been done.

Although snowfalls have stopped work on higher trails a lot of work is being done to improve and develop lower routes including a spectacular route climbing 170m vertically past numerous waterfalls. However the main focus is now on controlling poaching which has increased dramatically with the onset of Covid and associated job losses amongst villagers. John's anti-poaching team have destroyed 600 snares and arrested 2 poachers since they set up the team.

Work on paths continues. Poaching continues to be a major problem. We have now set up an anti-poaching unit, given them uniforms and they have two UWA rangers to help and protect them. Rewards are paid for snares destroyed or poachers caught. Once again thank you for all the contributions received which should allow us to keep going till the end of September. Bridge building is waiting for more funds.

Work continues - in Kilembe river crossings and tracks are being repaired. The health centre buildings are ready for supplies and staff to start coming in. In the mountains paths have been re-instated and smaller bridges built. But poaching is on the increase. Luckily UWA has provided two rangers to help John organise a local team to help fight the poaching. Hopefully a tougher approach and education will help a truce to be arranged. Here are some archive photos of a group of poachers surrendering their spears and snares.

Had a great trek in 2019, just could not have been better. The Ruwenzori are a gem few know about and more should. Best of luck getting things up and running again.

Good luck. Was there in 1972. Magical and socially challenging at the same time.
