Story
Amputee football is new to Scotland and for the first time, a team of Scottish amputee footballers have been invited to take part in a European tournament in Holland. The tournament, which takes place on 24-25 June 2017, forms part of a larger para-sport festival in the picturesque city of Breda. It will see Scotland's only amputee football team take on European rivals from The Netherlands and Germany in a tri-nation amputee football cup.
For most of the players, since they started playing football in 2016, this is the first time they have been able to participate in team sport, missing out on countless opportunities in their lives as a result of their limb-loss. Each member of the team has a different story - some lost limbs to cancer, others at birth, others through accident or trauma. All have overcome huge odds and amputee football, which is played all over the world, puts these individuals on a level playing field providing opportunities for fitness, friendship and competitive sport.
Amputee Football Association Scotland (AFAS) was an organisation set up in November 2016 with support from Partick Thistle Community Trust, and gained charitable status in April 2017. We believe amputees and those with limb differences should have the opportunity to play football on a level playing field and we will strive to create an amputee football league in Scotland at senior and junior level. But as a brand new charity, funds are minimal.
We are raising money to send Scotland's only amputee football players to compete in Holland. We need your help to do this and anything you can give is hugely appreciated.
