Story

I will be participating in the 24 hour Spartan 2017 Ultra World Championship in Iceland on the 16th December. I have taken this opportunity to also raise funds for The Special Olympics Gibraltar and GBC Open Day.

Special Olympics is an international, non profit making organization that changes lives by encouraging and empowering people with intellectual disabilities, promoting acceptance for all, and fostering communities of understanding and respect worldwide.

Donating to Special Olympics Gibraltar enables the athletes, both at home, and travelling abroad to World Games where participation has enabled their potential to shine through and helping them transform their lives through sport.

As a teenager, I was a volunteer during the Games held in Gibraltar for a number of years. As someone who was always involved in all kind of sports, I appreciated the competitiveness, positivity and sheer will to succeed in those with intellectual disabilities. I was amazed at what they could achieve, they are proof that anyone can do anything they put their mind too! I enjoyed the experience and became attached to all those I met. The organisation brings people together from all walks of life. As you all may know I try and raise funds for them every year to put towards their annual events.

The GBC Open day is fund-raising event that normally takes place a week before Christmas Day, always on a Wednesday. This annual event has grown from year to year. Originally, it would encompassed a number of fundraising initiatives that took place on the day of the Open Day itself, but over the years this has grown, and now a number of fundraisers are held throughout the year with money being presented at the Open Day on the day of broadcast. This year the GBC Open Day will take place on Wednesday 13th December, The event starts on radio Gibraltar at 9am, and continues on radio until 7pm. GBC Television normally takes over, starting their televised version of the event after the news bulletin, from 9pm till the early hours.

The Spartan 2017 Ultra World Championship is a 24 hour non stop, as many laps as you can, obstacle event. In order to officially finish the race I must complete a total of six 5 mile laps (approx 30mi / 48km).

I have recently completed my triple trifecta for 2017 and I want to finish the year with the biggest challenge yet, facing an ultra event.
