Story
We are fundraising to enable Albrighton Community Fridge to continue to support those facing food insecurity this year.
In the face of the current Cost of Living Crisis, unrest in various parts of the world, spiralling costs of accommodation, and changes to the benefits and welfare system, increasing numbers of people are simply not able to afford the food they need to eat each week.
This year as with previous years we will be trying to make the Christmas holiday period a little more manageable for those using the Community Fridge by ensuring our users have a food hamper to keep them fed over the holiday period. Whilst by no means everyone using the Community Fridge celebrates Christmas, unfortunately everyone is affected by it.
Many of the organisations providing food support close their doors over the holiday, or offer a reduced service, so we would like to ensure that everyone accessing food at Albrighton Community Fridge has enough food to last the holiday period.
We estimate this year we will provide food hampers for around 600 households, varying in size from single people living alone to larger families of seven or eight people.
Hampers will be tailored to match the needs of the household composition, to help us reduce wastage, and include general grocery items, meat and poultry, dairy, fresh fruit and vegetables, and personal care items. Hampers will contain a mixture of items directly donated and others that we have purchased ourselves.
A donation of £50 will pay for a hamper to feed a family over this Christmas period.
A donation of £30 will pay for a hamper to feed someone living on their own over the Christmas period.
Whatever you donate, your donation will go towards ensuring that no one goes without food this Christmas holiday.
In the run up to Christmas and throughout the Christmas period we will continue to collect unused and unwanted food from local food retailers, in addition to food donations from individuals, groups, clubs, schools, businesses and other organisations. Please get in touch to find out about other ways you can help.
In the last two years since Albrighton Community Fridge joined Hubbub Foundation’s Food Connect scheme, which provided the Community Fridge with an electric van to help with over 170 food collections we make each week, Albrighton Community Fridge has provided the equivalent of over one million meals.
As the numbers at the top of this page show, we have been incredibly fortunate to have received tremendous support through our JustGiving page. It is only through the hard work of our staff and volunteers, and through the generosity of those who have been able to donate both food and money to Albrighton Community Fridge, that we have been able to help so many people.
We are immensely grateful to all those who have supported us to get this far.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t end here. Need continues to grow, as does the challenge of meeting an ever increasing demand for food. Each week we see new people coming to the Community Fridge to access food, increasingly with complex needs, vulnerable households referred by social services, homeless, those living in poor accommodation with no cooking facilities, people recently discharged from hospital with dietary requirement related to health conditions, refugees and asylum seekers. Each day the queue of people needing food is long and we know the next day and the one after will be the same.
Having provided a million meals, we are going to provide a million more! We are currently receiving over 45 tonnes of food from a range of sources each week, which is fantastic, but demand still outstrips supply.
Thank you for your support!
