What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered nonprofit.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

Story

We are supporting two specific causes in memory of our beloved Alana, who died on 25th July 2019.

Firstly, in Madagascar we want to directly help the villagers of Anjajavy and the surrounding area. This is an extremely poor region, and for the villagers to leave their farms and spend 10 days searching for Alana was extraordinarily generous. We are hoping to fund the construction of a much-needed extra classroom at the local school, which will mean that none of the children will need to have lessons outdoors as is currently the case.

Secondly, in the UK we are setting up a bursary at Alana's University home, Robinson College, Cambridge. This will be specifically for the benefit of female students, something that we know Alana would have thoroughly approved of.

Every small donation will make a difference; thank you. We will continue to post periodic updates below as things pan out.

It's been a while since we posted here, so here is a brief update. As you know, The Alana Cutland Fund for female undergraduates in STEMM subjects at Robinson College Cambridge has been up and running since last term. We're delighted that it's set up in a way which means the fund will continue to give out grants in perpetuity. The Madagascar village project has proved harder to move ahead (perhaps unsurprisingly), but we've just engaged with a new channel through which we're confident we can start to get things done. More on this soon. Neil&Ali

Dear all. Thanks to some fantastic donations in the last few weeks, you have now taken our total over £30,000. One new gift in particular represents the donations of literally hundreds of individuals. Other recent gifts are from corporate sources, which has been a huge and moving surprise to us. Thank you, each and every one of you. As we've said many times, Alana would be really proud. Neil & Ali x

Dear all. We're delighted to tell you that 'The Alana Cutland Fund' is now formally constituted at Robinson College, Cambridge, and is open to applications from female science undergraduates as of today. Thank you so much for enabling this, and we know that Alana would be very proud. We will continue to update you with our plans in Madagascar as things fall into place there too. Neil & Ali x
