Story
Saltspace is a new non-profit cooperative created by Glasgow School of Art students and graduates in collaboration with Glasgow School of Art. Our aim is to provide a space to support GSA graduates and creative people within Glasgow to make, sell and exhibit their work as a stepping stone into their artistic career.
We have been given three properties as part of Glasgow City Property’s, 'Meanwhile spaces'. Those include, 142 Saltmarket, 98 Saltmarket & 270 High Street. All three units are connected under SaltSpace but each specific unit will have its own function. There will be Salt Maker Space, Salt Community Space and Salt Gallery.
The Maker Space will have 4/5 desk spaces for new graduates and creative people looking for an affordable studio space with a strong support network of creative people. In this space we will also have a shop where members of the co operative can sell their work for a low commission rate. In this space, members of the public will get a chance to witness the artists behind the artwork, unveiling the creative process.
Community Space - Within the space we will nurture and share the skills of our creative members through weekly workshops and a programme of events and talks in collaboration with local residents, businesses and the wider community of which we are a part of.
Gallery Space - This space will consist of a gallery and residency area for 1-2 people where we will provide the opportunity for artists in the very beginning of their career to have a studio space where they can develop work with the aim of exhibiting it within the Salt Gallery. This space will also provide a platform for other SaltSpace members to exhibit their work for the public.
We have been provided with these spaces rent free for one year but there are many other costs involved in ensuring that SaltSpace is able to run successfully. We need your help to raise money for materials, furniture, small equipment, WiFi, and maintenance costs.
Our aim is to be open for September and every donation will contribute to this project and help us open it to the public and for membership sooner! Every supporter will be invited to our launch night and have the opportunity to chat to our founding members. Thank you for your support.
