I've raised £2000 to help fund a specialist orthotic helmet for Aibhlínn

Aibhlínn has torticollis, which causes extreme tightness in the muscles of her neck on her right side. As a result of this she has always turned her head to the right when lying down and this has lead to her skull becoming flat and misshapen- a condition called plagiocephaly. We were told by physio and doctors that the torticollis would improve with a programme of stretches and the plagiocephaly would improve as she grew and began to spend less time on her back. Unfortunately this has not been the case, we have seen little improvement in the torticollis despite following the stretching programme and repositioning advice and we became very concerned about the shape of her head.
We decided to seek another opinion and get Aibhlínn assessed by a specialist orthotist. Her degree of flattening is classed as severe as it is affecting her facial features, and if left untreated it has the potential to impact on her vision and certainly her appearance. A specialist orthotic helmet will help to correct the shape of her head and the asymmetry of her features. This treatment has very good results and is currently the only option available to treat severe plagiocephaly. Aibhlínn will have to wear the helmet 23 hours a day for at least 7 months.
The NHS do not provide any funding for orthotic helmets for plagiocephaly as they say it is 'cosmetic' issue which doesn't have a long term impact and resolves itself as the child grows. This is true in most mild cases, but we were advised that due to the severity of Aibhlínn's presentation that it would only become worse if left untreated.
The total cost of the helmet is £2,575. We have been very touched by the number of people who have said they would like to help with the costs and would be so grateful for any contributions. Thank you so much for helping our beautiful girl have the best chance in life. She has already been through so much in her short life and deserves the best going forward.
