Story
We are a social impact community organization that seeks to support, equipping and empower youths, advocates and community leaders becoming change agents within their own communities. We work on many exciting projects to help improve the lives of others and are immensely proud of the progress we continue to make.
In March 2020 in partnership with Girls Empowerment Sierra Leone (GESL) to produce our virtual learning staying (Safe, Healthy and Empowered) series. The SHE series focuses on virtual learning experiences for girls in Sierra Leone to keep them safe, healthy, and empowered during the #COVID19 lockdown period.
We have started our second operation our ‘For Girls Matter ’ a project to empower and help prevent female genital mutilation (FGM) during COVID 19 period on adolescent girls in Eastern Kenema through funding we received by the Five Foundation (a Global Partnership to End FGM) with our partners Wi Gial Pekin Dem Foundation and Senava Project.
In October 2020 we found girls in our project attendance at school increased by at least an extra 3 days per month, additionally reporting a higher level of confidence in the classroom.
We want to minimize the stigma surrounding menstrual hygiene. We found that over 90 % girls from the ages of 11-16 in Eastern Kenema, Sierra Leone period poverty is a leading cause for absenteeism. By distributing reusable, biodegradable sanitary napkins, we want to equip young girls to feel confident during menstruation. Our main goal is to reduce school absenteeism and increase well-being in these communities.
A Girl At A Time would like to tackle the problem with sustainable solutions which also addresses the environmental issues. Commercial sanitary napkins are expensive and harmful to the environment. With no substantial waste disposal methods, plastic sanitary napkins and can lie in the vicinity for years. Often girls must ask older men for money in turn often develops into proposal for marriage that leads to child and early marriage
The reusable, biodegradable sanitary napkins distributed in the dignity packs by A Girl t A Time will equip a girl to feel confident for up to two years at a cost of £10 per girl.
A £10 donation will purchase one reusable sanitary kit and support our goal to ensure 500 girls no longer miss school due to period poverty in 2021.
What is in the bags dignity sanitary pads, toiletries, clothes, pen, books, toothbrush, towels and SRHR materials etc. Ages of the girls (ages 11 -17 years old). These girls are also at risk of child and early marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM). Our dignity packs will also contain some information for the adolescent girls to seek help and advice available to the girls in their community.
Water tanks is to provide the girls access to water for washing facilities and toilet facilities as part of a menstrual hygiene management.
