Story

Join Generation Outside Afghanistan and Afghans Empowered this Ramadan for our Ramadan appeal to provide safe refuge for Afghan migrants in Greece. Our shelter will provide privacy, security, and comfort, to Afghans seeking a better life in Greece. Your Zakat will provide peace and safety for our fellow brothers and sisters. For just 125 Euros, you can support the rent and accommodation for a one month stay for one Afghan refugee. In addition to providing shelter, Generation Outside Afghanistan will welcome residents of the shelter to access services that include legal assistance, psychology services, digital literacy, and English/Greek language through the Community Center in Athens, Greece.

“Indeed, those men and women who give in charity and lend to Allah a good loan will have it multiplied for them, and they will have an honorable reward. (Surah Al-Hadid – 57:18)

According to Greek law, individuals who have been recognized as refugees, or individuals whose application for asylum has been rejected and are in the appeal process, are not entitled to housing or financial assistance.

In Greece, most Afghans live in camps and NGO-run centers for more than 3-4 years, with only a basic grasp of Greek or English. When they have to leave this accommodation, they find it difficult to support their daily needs or find employment. This particularly affects vulnerable groups and single parent families. With no housing or financial assistance, they cannot provide for their children.

After hearing so many stories of daily struggle, Generation Outside Afghanistan has acquired a temporary safe shelter with 12 beds to give temporary housing to those in the most vulnerable situations.

Shelter will be provided for short periods until people can get on their feet and learn some Greek, English, computer skills or other employability skills, which are already being taught at Generation's community center.

For the coming year, Generation estimates the cost to maintain this temporary safe shelter will be EUR 1,500 per month, which includes:

- The costs of hiring a shelter manager

- Rental fees

- Water fees

- Electricity fees

This temporary safe shelter will be the first for the Afghan community in Greece, and Generation hopes to acquire more temporary safe spaces to meet the growing needs and circumstances of Afghans in need.
