I was in Lesbos for over 3 weeks in August, giving acupuncture to refugees. During this time, I gave 145 treatments to 35 people. Many of the symptoms were acute, requiring daily treatments. Thanks to this intensity of treatment, we achieved a great reduction in pain levels and trauma symptoms.

The living conditions inside the Lesbos refugee camp are totally inhumane and this doesn't give anyone an opportunity to heal from the many traumas experienced in their home countries and in the terrible journeys that brought them to Greece. Living here is constantly re-traumatising refugees who are living in tents in 40o heat, without running water, in an unhealthy dusty and uneven terrain that not even able-bodied people can navigate with ease.

There is no trauma or holistic care available to refugees apart from a single organisation founded by my amazing friend Fabiola Velasquez. Often, she is the only person offering help that aims not only to relief physical symptoms, but to offer a safe space where refugees can feel human again after all the indignities they are subjected to on a daily basis. I was touched by every person I met in August and I feel called to go again and offer my time, skills, and humanity to show refugees that we do care and that they're not alone.

One day, it could be us or our loved ones in need of refuge and humane treatment. Let's plant the seeds of love and compassion so we can harvest this later.
