Among the Achuar people of northern Peru, the Tsunki, revered water spirit women who inhabit their rivers and lakes, are the source of their shamanic powers and essential to their way of life. However, on October 3, 2024, a catastrophic oil spill caused by the national oil company contaminated these sacred waters. The Achuar face a dire crisis. They rely on these water sources for all their food and drink, and now they are suffering from severe health issues including skin infections, vomiting, diarrhea, tuberculosis, fever, and tragically, death.

In response to this urgent situation, a community leader is tirelessly traveling between the 11 affected Achuar communities. He is compiling lists of those who are sick and those who have lost their lives in this tragedy. This information is being shared with a supportive congresswoman who is advocating for medical assistance from the Peruvian Minister for Health. However, without financial support for his efforts, he cannot continue this critical work.
