At Community Cook Up, we are raising funds to help a hardworking family in a difficult situation. They need help to cover the costs of school uniforms for their children – a boy and a girl. What they have paid out already has meant they are unable to afford their rent, which is due on 15 September.

The extra costs have put a significant strain on their finances. In addition, the family received less income last month as the woman had a fever and was unable to work for a week, and is not entitled to sick pay.

The family is here on a skilled workers visa, which brings its own challenges. While they work tirelessly to provide for their children, the visa restrictions mean they cannot access ANY benefits and are required to stay in the same extremely low-paid job for three years, limiting their options and trapping them in a very low-wage situation, with half of their wages paying back debts.
