Story

Today seven Extinction Rebellion protesters were convicted for occupying the Aberpergwm coal mine in South Wales last July.

We were found guilty for protesting about a new licence to dig up 40 MILLION TONNES of coal. It will create 120m tonnes of CO2. Just mining the coal creates 1.17m tonnes of methane (80x more powerful than CO2).

This is climate insanity!

At our trial, the judge said our protest wasn't justified because there was "no imminent threat to life"

A few days after our protest, the UK had its first ever 40C heatwave. Over three thousand people died in England and Wales, many of them over 65.

The seven protesters - Dougald, Jamie, Mike, Pam, Ros, Sahrah, and Steve - were given £5,537 in prosecution costs & fines, and need £2,463 in defence costs.

The protesters say: ‘Our leaders are failing us. At COP26 in Glasgow the UK sounded the “death knell of coal”. A few weeks later they issued a new licence for this mine. The UK and Welsh governments talk about net zero, but they keep investing more and more money in planet-killing fossil fuels. We were found guilty today, but we’re just the canaries in the coal mine. If we keep on burning coal, it’s game over for everyone…’

All money raised will go towards paying the legal fees & fines from this case. Anything left over will be donated to the XR Legal Fund to help other rebels who have stepped up and taken action.

Diolch!
