Story
Rather than just supporting one charity Winchester RFC President Rob Sanderson has opted to support a number of different good causes for his charity lunch on Saturday 28th September prior to the 1st XV fixture against Chobham RFC.
However its much better to create a challenge and so commencing on Wednesday 25th September Rob will cycle the 300 miles visiting all of the other 11 clubs in the South Central Regional League. Currently Rob will be joined by 7 others; Rolf Stratford (Previous WRFC President) Tim Pike. (past WRFC & now Chobham member) Sue Dorrington ( Great Britain and England International & World Rugby Hall of Fame) Terry Burwell ( Hampshire RFU Representative) and friends David Hill, David Lewis & Jack Simpson who have been fabulous supporters of Rob’s previous cycle fundraisers for the MND Association.
Vehicle support driver is Paul Beckett, Rob’s WRFC team mate from 1975 and past Chairman of the club.
The route will take them to Tottonians, Bournemouth, Wimborne, North Dorset, Andover, Newbury, Chobham, Farnham, Guildford, Petersfield, Chichester and back to Winchester in time for the lunch on Saturday.
The good causes being supported have been selected by WRFC’s key community sponsor partners and are: Young Lives vs Cancer, Trinity Winchester, The Rosemary Foundation, HIOWAA, Winchester Beacon, Winchester GoLD, together with Robs ongoing support for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) under the CycleForKate banner.
The team hope to raise £1k for each charity.

5 months agoWell we all successfully completed the 300 miles cycling around the 12 league clubs arriving back late morning at Winchester RFC.Whilst the sun shone on Saturday the previous 3 days weather was simply atrocious. None of us have ever cycled in weather like it especially doing 95 miles on Thursday. But a particular thank you to my fellow cyclists for simply saying “yes” to joining me and to Paul as our support vehicle driver. You simply can’t do these things without a good team.

5 months agoOur route around the Regional 2 South Central league is a good challenge. Day 1 sees us covering 84 miles visiting Tottonians, Bournemouth, Wimborne (for lunch) and North Dorset. Day 2 is 94 miles calling in at Andover and Newbury. Day 3 is another 93 miles but a busy one visiting 5 clubs; Chobham, Guildford, Farnham, Petersfield and Chichester. After an overnight stop at Rowlands Castle we’ll cover the remaining 28 miles back to Winchester on Saturday morning in time for the pre match lunch with our guest speaker Wayne Barnes.

6 months agoWith still over 4 weeks to go before we set off thank you all for your fabulous support already. It will make such a difference to these charities. Here’s a photo of two of the team with myself at our pre match lunch before playing London Irish Wild Geese last season. I’m so pleased that both Terry and Sue accepted the challenge to join us on this adventure. It’s wonderful how the rugby community come together in this way.
