Story
Gavin 'The Strolling Saxon' is a member of Uckfield Bonfire and Carnival Society and is undertaking a personal challenge to raise funds for the society.
Gavin will be walking over 5km in the Uckfield Carnival parade on 7th September 2024 wearing full Saxon fighting kit (armour). In total Gavin will be wearing 130Kg (20 stone) of clothing and equipment. Just imagine carrying a large full grown person while walking 5km!
This will be a epic achievement as in December last year Gavin was in a stationary car that was hit by a van travelling at 45mph. His injures were significant and most of his back was affected by the trauma of the accident leaving him with limited movement over the left side of his body. Gavin spent a significant amount of time in hospital and at home recovering and is now ready and on a personal mission to complete this incredible feat given the events of the last 9 months.
Gavin has started training and building up his strength and stamina. Since the accident Gavin has lost around 4 stone in weight so needs to work hard to be ready to wear the full kit at the Carnival.
Keep your eyes open when travelling through Uckfield as you may spot a Saxon warrior complete with shield walking the carnival route. If you see him give him a toot and a wave.
Please support Gavin and donate all you can towards the Uckfield Carnival Street Collection.

4 months agoSince the last update our Strolling Saxon has been rather busy. Training walks on the carnival route wearing an increasing amount of kit and a 4 day appearance at the England Medieval Festival wearing chain mail and taking the microphone to commentate on some of the arena events. This is all good preparation for the Carnival on the 7th but it has shown how big a challenge this is for Gavin. His unstable spine injuries (and a few blisters) are uncomfortable but Gavin is determined to walk the whole carnival route in the full Saxon armour.

4 months ago21st August - with only a blister or two Gavin has completed his first walk of the carnival route. This was completed with 35Kgs of the clothes and equipment on. Next planned walk of the route is Thursday 22nd with around 95Kgs of kit. Gavin plans to set off from the Bell Lane area at 7.30pm so if you are in town look out for him and if you fancy a stroll please feel free to join him. You won't miss him, he will be the one wearing chain mail and carrying a shield and possibly other bits and pieces!
