Story

Funded by charitable donations, Treak Community Centre in Siem Reap, Cambodia provides free education to over 350 children and young people every day. The parents and families of Treak’s students faced the challenges of going to school during and after the Khmer Rouge period. They and Treak’s teachers share the generally held belief within Cambodian society that education has been, and continues to be, an important factor in Cambodia's peace and stability following the horrors of the recent past.

Treak Community Centre is making a difference. They run a thriving pre-school nursery, provide English classes and a wide range of other subjects that are not taught in primary schools such as science, arts & crafts, geography, health and nutrition, and personal development. These topics contribute to the students’ overall development, and also help them to get decent jobs in the tourism industry centred on Siem Reap and the Angkor Wat temple complex.

Treak also assist through their Community Support Programme that provides training, jobs, and income for parents and other villagers to help people take control of their own futures. Treak’s overarching philosophy is to create opportunities not dependency.

In the past few years, during and after covid, donations have helped the school to continue and they are now looking to the future and need support to invest in new kitchen facilities and to improve the very basic toilet and washing arrangements.

Upgrading these facilities is not a luxury but a pressing need, not only for the everyday runningof the school but as an integral component of our plans to generate income through our new social enterprise, “Treak Creations”.

Salin’s dream of the sewing centre not only training women but providing a more sustainable income for the school is finally coming true after the upheaval caused by the pandemic. She and her team are now producing a range of handcrafted clothing and other goods for sale. Each item sold creates employment, helps to keep families together, and supports children's education. In addition, to bring more people to Treak, we wish to run cooking classes at school for tourists, who will then be able to visit the Treak Creations shop and view the items for sale. New kitchen and toilet facilities are essential for this venture, along with structural alterations and a separate entrance so that visitors do not have access to the main school grounds.
