Story

Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters,

In August 2024, my brother, James and I will be joined by our friends, Dylan and Jamal, to embark on a 1000 mile journey which traces the pedal strokes of our father, Tony Doyle, who passed away last year.

Unfortunately, Dad's life was cut short by pancreatic cancer, aged just 64, a cruel disease that took him from us just 4 weeks after diagnosis.

Dad, a twice World Pursuit Champion and the victor of twenty-three 6-day races, found a special place in his heart for the boards and cities of Germany. It's where he etched his name into cycling history, claiming numerous victories.

One of the last conversations we had with Dad was about the idea of completing a charity bike ride around Germany, visiting all of the German cities where he won 6-days. You could visibly see the lift that this gave him as a glint returned to his eye whilst he told us his extraordinary stories of racing in Germany.

There was, however, one unfortunate night in Munich that was a significant part of Dad’s story. In 1989, in front of thousands of fans, he suffered a serious head injury that left him in a coma for eight days. In Dad’s true spirit, he emerged from his near fatal crash with resilience and determination, and against all odds, returned to win the same race in Munich, just one year later. Throughout his recovery, Dad found solace and support in Headway, a charity dedicated to improving life after brain injury.

In Dad’s memory we’ve pledged to raise 50% of funds for Pancreatic Cancer and 50% for Headway.

Pancreatic Cancer UK receives just 3% of the total cancer research budget. As a result, it’s still too difficult to diagnose, too tough to treat, and has the lowest survival rate of all common cancers. Any donation will go a long way to supporting the vital research that is needed in this area.

Headway was a charity that was very close to Dad’s heart. He remained a patron until the end and it would fill him with pride knowing that his legacy of charity work and support continues. With your generous contributions, we can ensure that others facing similar challenges receive the care, guidance, and support they need to rebuild their lives.

Due to the nature of the challenge, donations/loans in the form of items such as a support van, bike equipment, cycle clothing etc. would also be greatly appreciated. If you’d like to donate any items like the above then please email me at george20792@hotmail.com

Every turn of the pedals on this journey will be a tribute to Tony’s legacy and a reminder of the battles he faced with grace and determination. We invite you to join us in honoring his memory and making a difference in the lives of those affected by pancreatic cancer and brain injuries.

Your support means the world to us and we are forever grateful. For the champ! X.

* A small portion of the funds received will go towards subsiding the cover of travel costs

Many of you are beloved family and friends of ours, and many of you are people who never knew of us until we got lucky enough to be featured on BBC Radio One this week, and every day we’ve been blown away by your kindness. We wanted to update you with our progress on this journey sooner, but quite frankly, we’ve been exhausted 😅. Please know that we’ve been refreshing the donation page multiple times a day, with our jaws on the floor at the kindness all of you have shown.

Hello to each and every one of you 310 (!!) incredible human beings who have so kindly donated and shared beautiful words of encouragement with us over the past few weeks. We are so grateful, elated and excited to share that we have officially surpassed our initial goal of raising £10,000 for Pancreatic Cancer UK and Headway UK. We (quite literally) could not have done this without you and have so much gratitude for each and every one of you.
