The Butterfly Effected: Using Art as a Vehicle to Spread Hope and Positivity

Introduction

We are a movement that uses the power of art, storytelling, and therapy to inspire and support individuals facing adversity, with a particular focus on addiction and mental health.

Founded by myself and co-directed by Hayley Garner, our organisation is dedicated to making a positive impact on lives through creative expression, community engagement and support.

The Idea For Butterfly Effected

“I have been through my own personal struggles with addiction and mental health (Now over 11 years free from Heroin, Crack and Benzodiazepines).

While in rehab I found art again, being creative gave me a purpose and focus. Art helped so much during my recovery, and after getting clean the last time 11 years ago. Something clicked. I knew there was more to life, that I could use my time to help people through their dark times. It made sense to use art as a tool to reach people. I know how dark and lonely it can be at the worst of times. Sometimes interacting with other humans can be the hardest thing in the world. But sharing stories and experiences of overcoming your hard times to others going through them turns into inspiration and hope.

This is what brought me to create 'The Butterfly Effected' project. It's a belief that the stories we tell, the art we create, can break down barriers, reminding us that we're never truly alone in our struggles”.

Our Mission

To empower individuals to overcome challenges, find healing, and discover their inner strength. We believe in the power of art to connect, heal, and transform. Through murals, workshops, and free professional therapy sessions, we aim to break down stigmas, encourage dialogue, and inspire hope.

How Your Contribution Will Make a Difference:

Art Therapy Workshops - Your donation will help us organise art therapy workshops that provide a safe space for individuals to explore their emotions, express themselves creatively, and connect with others who understand their journey. These sessions will be held in various centres across the country such as schools, rehab centres, detox centres, hospitals, community centres and many other similar venues/ services

Impactful Murals - With your support we can commission world-class artists to create powerful murals that tell stories of resilience, triumph, and transformation. The artists in residence will visit Hostels, rehab centres and various other groups and organisations to create informed art around subjects of social impact and important issues surrounding mental health and wellbeing. These murals will serve as beacons of hope, fostering conversations and promote understanding.

Community Engagement - Your contribution will enable us to host community events, art exhibitions, and panel discussions that bring people together to discuss mental health, share experiences, and break down societal barriers.

Access to Healing - Your donation will help us provide accessible therapy sessions to individuals who may not have the means to afford traditional therapy. Everyone deserves the chance to heal and grow, and your support can make that possible. We have partnered with a number of therapy providers who offer support in an array of different disciplines from face to face to equestrian therapy and everything in between. Our aim is to provide a diverse range of services and to be as inclusive as we possibly can.
