Story
Our boys were only 11 and 8 when they first said my husband, Stuart, had Breast Cancer! He was 37, healthy and fit with no family history. The shock and fear was undescribable but the lack of practical information for male sufferers was pathetic. All info was about bras, make up, implants and wigs (women's only!) They didn't even have a picture of a male mastectomy to show men the outcome of their operation, but a whole book of women.
So despite having a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy Stuart has spent the last 11 years changing this. Stuart donated images of his mastectomy, so others in the UK now have a reference. When told he could not have the drug Herceptin, AS HE WAS A MAN, we used the media to help change policies to make this available to all who now need it. Stuart has inspired & campaigned to highlight male breast cancer, saving lives through education and discussion, giving talks to schools and groups, run and attended MANY charity events, modeled at Breast Cancer Care Fashion shows, climbing Ben Nevis & Snowdon for the charity.
6 years after his mastectomy, it returned and Stuart had major surgery to remove his sternum. This stopped him going to Aikido and playing his beloved football, a lifelong Liverpool fan. Stuart's love of Ska music and his childhood dream of owning a scooter grew.
Now 5 years on, we have just been told Stuart has secondary breast cancer in his lungs and is about to start chemo for a third time. After this, he will then have to go for treatment ever 3 weeks...for life.
We have been Therapeutic foster parents for almost 3 years but now have to give up our young person due to Stuart's illness. which is very upsetting. As this was my main job we must now sell our family home & have an uncertain future. I truly think now is the time Stuart got his dream of a mod scooter, to put the smile back on his face.
If you could help me grant him this in any way, I would be forever grateful.
