Story
In 2012 I met Whinny and her brother Shem whilst working around Lake Victoria in Kenya. We became friends and work colleagues. A year later Whinny brought me to a small pre-school, Shiners School Kisumu, they were funding and running themselves for children from a nearby slum, the same slum that she and her brother grew up in.
Supported by her mum and other women market traders the school provides meals and a safe place for these small children to learn in. The goal is to get them up to the standard so they can enter the state primary school system. Even then Shiners, helps several children through primary and secondary school with fees and materials.
Shiners looks after approximately 100, 2-10 year olds in this way. Many are AIDS orphans being housed by their extended families.
Sam and I have promised to support Whinny and Shem on their journey to help the children. Since 2012 I have visited with work duties and seen Shiners in operation on many occasions. I like the fact that 100% of our support goes directly to the school, Finding a direct personal relationship where you know this is the case is a very reassuring thing. I know Whinny and Shem are dedicated to their mission.
Shiners is now moving to the edge of Kisumu, to a safer, cleaner and healthier place. A small compound with trees and shade where the children can thrive and be safer, We are looking to raise small amounts of regular funds to make the school independent and sustainable. We want to provide solar lighting, biogas, new toilets, rain water harvesting and seed capital to start small income earning activities such as, poultry rearing and vegetable growing so Shiners can eventually stand on its own two feet.
Please support us, support Whinny and Shem and most of all support the children for a better life and opportunities.
