Story

In early 2022, I travelled to a village in a remote part of Western Ghana with Channel 4’s Dispatches to film a documentary exposing how Cadbury was using illegal child labour to pick cocoa beans for its chocolate . Whilst there we came across Sandra’s father who was struggling to feed his family. To survive , his children had to work long hours in gruelling conditions harvesting cocoa beans for Mondelez - the US multi-billion dollar corporation that owns Cadbury. Whilst working on the farm both Sandra and her younger sister had been badly injured from using long machetes and also had been bitten by snakes. Sandra’s father had to borrow money for medicine and hospital treatment. Despite the situation Sandra was happy to be interviewed . She was bright and spoke very good English explaining how she and her siblings had no choice but to pick cocoa but that she really wanted an education. When I asked her what she wanted to do Sandra said she really wanted to be either a nurse or a midwife. Her interview moved me to such an extent that I vowed to help her achieve her ambition when I returned to the UK. Through a trusted intermediary in Ghana I have so far personally paid some £1500 towards her admission costs to university, fees for her first two semesters, uniform, hostel accommodation and basic living expenses. However to become a qualified midwife Sandra will require funding for a further 3 and a half years plus money for items like food, books and a laptop. I‘ve now estimated that around £7000 should cover all these costs and I’m hoping you can help . From a previous round of fundraising I raised £1655 which will see Sandra complete her second year but I still need around £4000 to ensure she is funded to the end of her course. As you can see from the photo of Sandra she looks happy in her uniform and I’m sure will make a brilliant nurse or midwife.
