Story
In 2013, Rua Reidh Lighthouse Keepers Accommodation, Gairloch, Wester Ross, was purchased by a pension scheme. Prior to this, it was run as a visitors centre and hostel, and was open to the public. It is a major Highlands landmark, and attracts many visitors every year from all corners of the world.
Sadly, the beneficiaries of this pension scheme have, since the acquisition, sought to deny the public, motor vehicle access to the Lighthouse. The beneficiaries claim that the 3 mile road leading from the local village of Gairloch to the Lighthouse is only for motor vehicle use by certain 'approved' people, themselves and their guests included.
There have been horrifying reports of innocent members of the community and wider public using the road, being personally threatened by the beneficiaries. These reports are from walkers and cyclists, as well as those using vehicles.
To date, the Local Council, the Regional Highland Council, the Estate Owner and the Lighthouse owner (not the Keepers owner), have all accepted or indicated that the road is a public right of way. Yet the beneficiaries have gone to great lengths to deprive the public of its right to access not only the Lighthouse, but to land and viewpoints beyond.
Last year, we were successful in raising funds which were used to erect signage designed to help the public navigate safely to the Lighthouse.
The time has come to challenge the beneficiaries and regain unfettered access to the Lighthouse and surrounding area.
We are raising funds initially to assist with legal costs to challenge the beneficiaries. Whilst we anticipate success in this venture and recovery of certain legal costs, we would also use the funds to assist the community, if successful, in it's bid of a Community Right to Buy the Keepers Accommodation and surrounding land.
We would be proud once again to have this iconic landmark and beautiful views for the enjoyment of the community and wider public

Disgusted that this action has to be taken by a private individual and that the "authorities" dont seem to care about enforcing the law of access. A Local.

I have spent many years enjoying the wild beauty of the Northern Highlands, and have made some wonderful friends in what has quickly become my spiritual home. I believe that the community deserves to be reunited with Rua Reidh, and will do whatever I can in my power to help it
