I recently travelled to Essaouira in Morocco to direct a documentary on the subject of the treatment of animals in the area. Working closely with animal welfare organisation Refuge Gco and their partners Stray Further opened my eyes to a whole new world and I knew something had to be done.

On our journey what struck me was just how deep rooted the problems here are. Change is needed now. Education on the treatment of animals is vital to prevent such unnecessary suffering.

Refuge Gco are a unique and wonderful organisation, and meeting Gerard and Valerie was a life changing experience. However, they cannot achieve their dreams alone. We need your help to realise their ambitions to help the animals around them and further afield.

This is why the rural surgery that Refuge Gco are planning, and currently fundraising for is so desperately needed. This will become a community hub for locals, a place where they can get free medication and care for their animals, but also, a place for education. The only way that the care of animals in Morocco is going to get better is through a change in attitudes and that will be gained through knowledge. Refuge Gco hope to roll out an education scheme in the local schools to teach children how to treat and care for animals, with the hope that this information will infiltrate to the wider public, slowly, attitudes will alter and animals will get the care they deserve.

Dr. El Aji and Refuge Gco are using this surgery in Essaouira as a test bed. If successful it will be rolled out country wide. Morocco is a beautiful country with beautiful people, great warmth, character and love - and we hope that this project will add to the beauty.
