Story

Queen's University School of Nursing and Midwifery have entered eight teams of five staff and students into the 2024 Belfast City Marathon. The teams will be raising much needed funds for the following charities:

Cradle: https://cradlecharity.org/ - Charity is a national pregnancy loss charity working with Healthcare Professionals within the NHS, to support their pregnancy loss services. Our national team of volunteers and corporate partners donate CRADLE Comfort Bags to more than 45 NHS hospitals, these are filled with essential toiletries made available to women or couples receiving care, during or following pregnancy loss.

The Brian Conlon Foundation: https://brianconlonfoundation.com/about/ - The Brian Conlon Foundation was founded in April 2022 by Brian’s wife Julie, sister Kathy and brother Ciaran to celebrate his life, promote his passions and continue his legacy. In Brian’s professional and personal endeavours, he made a substantial contribution to the local community from a business, educational, sporting, and charitable perspective. Brian supported many people and deserving causes often quietly and without fuss and the Foundation now supports cancer research and prevention, having forged links with QUB through The Patrick G Johnston Centre For Cancer Research At Queens University Belfast and provides funding into their cancer research teams, with a specific focus on early detection of Oesophageal Cancer.

WAVE Trauma Centre: https://wavetraumacentre.org.uk/ - We provide care and support for people affected by the Troubles/Conflict in Northern Ireland. From December 2020 WAVE provide services to Survivors of Historical Institutional Abuse (HIA). WAVE offer care and support to anyone bereaved, injured or traumatised through the civil unrest in Northern Ireland, irrespective of religious, cultural or political belief.

ELSSA - https://elssafrica.org/about/ - ELSSA aims to promote, develop and deliver high quality health care and professional skills training for medical, midwifery, nursing and community practitioners in low resource countries in Africa, initially concentrating on South Sudan. Essential Obstetric (Mother) and Newborn Care (EONC) retraining courses for midwives, clinical officers and doctors, address the major causes of maternal and neonatal deaths and morbidity; haemorrhage, sepsis, eclampsia, obstructed labour, miscarriage and new-born resuscitation. To date 357 South Sudanese health professionals – 148 doctors and associate clinicians, 209 midwives and 17 midwifery tutors have attended the ELSSA EONC courses, gaining additional knowledge and skills. The value of EONC courses is established beyond question, pre- and post-course assessments show significant increases in knowledge and skills. Increasing the neonatal resuscitation skills will alone save many lives.

The Northern Ireland Kidney Research Fund (NIKRF) is the leading charity funding kidney research in Northern Ireland. NIKRF raise funds for life saving research into the causes, prevention and possible cures for kidney disease. NIKRF provide specialised equipment for research and advances in treatment of kidney diseases not yet available on NHS. NIKRF are the voice for public awareness of kidney disease and its consequences. NIKRF promote organ donation - https://nikidneyresearch.org/
