    Story

In the early morning of 8 May 1942 the HMS Olympus made her way out of the Grand Harbour of Malta. Her ‘cargo’ consisted of dozens of submariners who had survived the sinking of two other submarines in Malta. Since this tragedy the vessel has lain forgotten on the seabed. Six decades later, a scientific mission set out to locate the wreck and survey its remains. The tragic episode as well as heroic tales of survival have never been memorialised. In May this year, an international dive team will descend 115 meters to the site to lay a memorial plaque by the shipwreck. Furthermore, a monument will be unveiled in a place the former Royal Navy submarine base off Manoel Island, Malta. On the 75th anniversary of this event we believe that this is a fitting way to recognise the supreme sacrifice made by these young men - may they never be forgotten.
