Story
Flytying for Autism is an initatve that was developed in 2023 to support young people with Autism. The programme has developed over the last year with group and 1-2-1 lesson taking place in Lincolnshire and at country shows.
The aim of Flytying for Autism is to provide a sanctuary where autism is fine, a place of acceptance where being you is encouraged. The art of fly tying provides the ideal craft in which expression in design, colour (or monochrome) can be unleashed. At the same time new skills, fine motor dexterity is developed in a safe calm environment.
Flytying for Autism was originally developed by Rob and his son Riley who is autistic as a way of spending quality time together, very quickly other families wanted to join in and the first community of flytying for Autism was built. Since those early days we have now got a network of ambassadors who support either through knowledge sharing or running a workshop.
The sessions normally in very small groups (max 5) with a tailored to the group with fun and learning at the centre of all that we do, when we are at country shows we offer free have a go sessions within either the flytying tent or at our bespoke flytying materials stand.
Why do we need help:
- To increase awareness of the initiative
- To reach a wider audience and support more young people
- To arrange days where the young people can take there flies and learn to fly fish and have that feeling of the first fish caught with a fly tied by themselves
- To build self confidence of autistic young people
- To unlock the talent and creative brilliance
- To build a community
