Story

I am looking to raise funds for possibly 2 communication board's, one at Hurst Green Park, and one at Hope Street. A JustGiving link is below if you wish to donate, if you wish to be a large business sponsor then get in touch and maybe get your company logo added to the board.

Symbols and Images Communication Boards:

Symbols and images communication boards are visual tools specifically designed to facilitate communication for individuals with limited verbal skills, such as those on the autism spectrum. These boards incorporate symbols, pictures, or icons that represent words, phrases, or concepts, making it easier for users to express themselves.

Key Features:

1. **Visual Representation**: The boards predominantly feature a variety of symbols and images that correspond to different meanings. For instance, a picture of an apple may represent "eat," while a smiling face may symbolize "happy."

2. **Categorisation**: The symbols may be organized into categories, such as food, emotions, activities, and daily routines. This organization helps users quickly locate and select the symbols that represent their needs or feelings.

3. **User-Friendly Design**: The layout is typically designed to be intuitive, allowing users to navigate easily and efficiently, which is especially important in fast-paced or stressful environments.

4. **Customizable Options**: These boards can be tailored to suit the specific needs of individuals, incorporating personalized images or symbols that resonate with their unique experiences and preferences.

Benefits:

1. **Enhanced Communication**: Users can communicate their needs, desires, and feelings more effectively by pointing to or selecting images. This is particularly beneficial for nonverbal individuals or those with limited speech capacities.

2. **Reduced Frustration**: By providing a means to convey thoughts and emotions, these boards can significantly decrease frustration caused by inability to communicate verbally. This leads to a more positive interaction with peers and caregivers.

3. **Support for Social Interaction**: The visual nature of symbols and images encourages engagement in social scenarios, allowing users to partake in conversations and interactions that they might otherwise struggle with.

4. **Visual Learning Aid**: Many individuals on the autism spectrum are visual learners. Using symbols and images aligns with their learning styles, making communication more accessible and effective.

Implementation:

Symbols and images communication boards are often placed in strategic locations within public spaces, such as in schools, hospitals, community centers, and play areas. The visibility and accessibility of these boards play a crucial role in promoting inclusive communication. Training for staff and community members on how to use and support these tools can further enhance their effectiveness, creating a more supportive environment for individuals who rely on them.

The board in the picture is an example and the one's added to the areas mentioned above will be designed specifically for that area.
