Story

As we prepare to face the festive season and winter celebrations, the Winter Solstice is fast approaching with it. It marks the darkest day of the year. I find myself drawn to a new challenge that transcends my physical limits. On December 21st, I’ll be climbing Slieve Donard from the saddle, striving to match the elevation gain of Mount Everest – 8849m, starting in darkness and finishing that night in darkness. This should take 24-30 reps.

As an ultra runner, running has provided me with significant personal benefits over the past four years since I started being physically active aged 31. Now, I feel it’s my turn to give something back to people struggling during this time of the year. While I’ve tackled my fair share of crazy challenges, this one feels different. Slieve Donard was my first-ever hike, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Since then, I’ve completed numerous mountain ultras and developed a strong interest in ultra running.

This challenge is not just about conquering a peak; it’s about shining a light on the darkness that often engulfs our minds in this world. The Winter Solstice symbolizes the literal darkness, yet the truth is, every day can be the darkest day when it comes to mental well-being.

I invite fellow runners, hikers, and anyone who resonates with this cause to join me. I’ll be navigating the ascent and descent to the saddle and back every 30/40 minutes throughout the day. Your company is not just welcomed; it’s a vital part of this journey.

This endeavor is more than a physical feat; it’s a personal story of resilience, empathy, and a shared commitment to mental health. I believe that by coming together, we can turn even the darkest days into beacons of hope.

As I embark on this challenge, I also invite you to be a part of it by contributing to the cause. Your donations will support mental health initiatives and make a lasting impact.

Thank you for being a part of my personal story and for standing with me to illuminate the path towards better mental well-being. 💙🏔️
