Story
On Saturday 20th May 2017 Children First will host a charity Book Fair, honouring the tragically short life of Kishori Salter.
Kishori was a free-spirited and warm-hearted young woman who loved languages and travelling, making friends wherever she went. Although she had allergies and asthma, she didn't let that stop her from living life to the full.
In 2014 Kishori came to stay with her aunt. She worked as a volunteer in the schoolhouse office, organising our first small book fair for international families.
In the summer of 2016 after a year living in France and Spain, Kishori travelled to Cuba and South America to improve her Spanish. She stayed at a backpacker's hostel in Bogota, Colombia, where at 8,000 ft above sea level the air was thinner than she realised. Her asthma medicines ran out a day before fresh supplies were due to arrive.
On 10th August, 2016 a day after a 110 meter bungee jump, she had an allergic reaction at altitude. This set off an asthma attack. A friend gave her mouth to mouth resuscitation in the taxi to the hospital but she died before she arrived.
Kishori's story is heartbreaking. And she's not the only one affected. It's estimated that 3 people die from asthma attacks every day. In the UK alone, someone has a life-threatening asthma attack every ten seconds. 17 million Europeans suffer from food allergies, and the number of children with serious food allergies has doubled in the last ten years.
In honour of Kishori, we are donating the proceeds of this second Global Book Fair to charities helping to raise awareness about these important issues. Asthma UK and FARE help fund research and outreach to children, parents and educators. The third beneficiary will be Room to Read, which promotes literacy projects in developing countries. One Swiss Franc buys one book for a child who is learning to read.
Families are invited to attend the book fair or you can make a donation. We want the world to know how much we care!
