Story
In January 2017, at the age of 41, I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I am not sad or angry about this because I know I am lucky to live in a country with amazing treatment and recovery rates. I also have amazing support from family and friends around me - including my housemate who is a refugee from Syria.
I asked him if we could raise money for children and adults with cancer in his home town of Aleppo. After doing some research we discovered there is no cancer treatment available in Aleppo. The cancer centre was closed and all equipment gone. So our initial fairly small scale idea must become a much bigger one. Like erm, a fundraiser for an entire cancer centre. A million will probably not be enough but is a good start... And we will be forging partnerships with the big NGOs to take the lead from them. But for now we will just start raising money and form a board of trustees to manage it. At this point it seems like a big idea, but large trees grow from acorns. (And if we don't manage to have a viable plan/partner to build a centre then we'll give all the money to doctors without borders (MSF) who do amazing work all over the world!)

With your support we can help children and adults in Aleppo get access to cancer care. We have heard that there is no cancer care in Aleppo for children or adults. Thank you for your support. 8 years agoHorray everybody - we passed £3000, amazing! Massive thank yous all round. I am in the UK as I have a week off from chemo to visit friends and family. Today I went to pick up my dad from hospital after an operation to remove prostate cancer. Crazy times for #teamgriggs but thanks to all the fabulous support we have we are doing well. Meanwhile I have been in contact with a hospital in Aleppo who are totally in awe of our crowdfunding as they currently can't offer treatment for cancer patients. I'll keep you posted. until then, hugs and love X

8 years agoDear amazing supporters building a cancer care centre in Aleppo! Together we raised over 2500 GBP in 2 days. Thank you. This really helped keep me going through the effects of the past 2 totally NASTY chemo sessions. But even though it feels every time like chemo will kill me, I know this is my chance of a cure. I think of the people around the world who are not as lucky. And that keeps me motivated. Love Katie #lovewins #teamkatie #healthcare4all PS I want to send everyone a thank you by post, so please send your postal address asap!

Please take care of the people with cancer in Syria, or anyone who needs this funding urgently for saving their life there.
