Story
If there's one thing you could remember about Caleb's personality, it was that he never stopped smiling! Caleb faced many challenges over his short life. A liver transplant at the age of 16 months, countless blood tests and hospital admissions for infections and tests to name a few.
Throughout all these times, Caleb's character shone through. He continued to laugh, smile, joke and think of others both older and younger than himself.
On March 23 2017, Caleb went into hospital for a routine tonsillectomy. For reasons no one can explain, he was unable to recover from his anaesthetic in recovery and admitted to PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care). After working on him for over 24 hours, Caleb suffered a catastrophic bleed across his brain. Nothing could be done to save him, nor could anything more be done to raise his low blood pressure. We decided to make the difficult decision and agree to withdraw care. Chloe and I had the opportunity to remove his tubes and leads, give him one final wash and dress him in his favourite minions pyjamas. The curtains were drawn, machines turned off and Caleb passed away in our arms.
Caleb was without doubt the most courageous little boy I've ever met. Throughout every adversary faced he never stopped smiling and just cracked on with life. He was our inspiration and my personal hero! His loss is unbearable but his memory and smile will be remembered by all who met him.
Many have asked us if they could give something towards remembering Caleb. We would like to put the money raised in part towards a nice headstone, but primarily towards some of the people/organisations who played a massive role in helping to support both Caleb and us as a family in times both good and bad. This will include the CLDF (Children's Liver Disease Foundation) and our local Children's Unit on the Isle of Wight.
Forever remembering Caleb Toby Smith 26/04/2012 - 24/03/2017.
