    Story

    Pierre Cachia (1921 - 2017)

Pierre Cachia was a much loved father to Susan, Philip and Helen and Grandfather to Jamie, Michael, Robbie, Elizabeth, Mary, Peter and Katy.

Born in Egypt, he did service as an interpreter for the British Army in World War 2 with a Scottish Regiment. After the war he settled in Scotland taking up his first academic post in Edinburgh before moving to Columbia University in New York..

His love of his subject and engaging the minds of his students was underlined in his achievement of 60 years of teaching before finally retiring at the age of 92.

He was instrumental in fashioning academic studies of modern Arabic literature into what it is today: grounded in native fluency of the Arabic language, informed by real experiences lived in close proximity with Arab writers and storytellers, and took seriously the concerns and priorities of Arab scholars, critics and intellectuals.

Last weekend would have been Dad's 96th birthday - and he was sorely missed. The family would like to thank you for your support contributing to this fund for him. The Times and the Scotsman published a lovely obituary on 22nd April and 2 May.

I think Helen told me that you were aiming to help some students who might otherwise have difficulty financially in following these courses. I'm sure Puncle would have been very happy with that.

Not that many Arabic instructors can make their most lamentable students (people like me) laugh out loud but Pierre's wry love of the language and its world was a contagious inspiration.

I consider Pierre Cachia to have been one of the finest teachers I have ever known, and feel fortunate to have attended several of his classes. He was also simply a wonderful man.
