    Story

BBQ on the Green is an annual cancer charity fundraiser started in 2015 and run nearly every year (apart from Covid years) since. The event was inspired after a lifelong friend, Mandy Ross-Read, a genuinely lovely lady was diagnosed with Triple Negative breast cancer. A much rarer type of breast cancer, which continues to be notoriously difficult to treat. The event brief was expanded when Kevin Boon, a family member to us and also a much loved local man and event collaborator was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, again a particularly aggressive strain

It was our feeling then and now, that when friends and family have to suffer these life-threatening illnesses, that somehow we just want to try and find a way to make it better for them and others like them.

We wanted to find a way to either directly help individuals, or to give to the medical researchers, coming up with new and effective treatments for breast and prostate cancer, or those treating or caring for those with it.

Fund-raising seemed one of the few things we could easily get onboard with. We settled on a simple idea of having a money raising BBQ, on the Green where we live. We hoped that within our community we might get a few people to come out to enjoy an event, with some food & drink and some live music, and the opportunity to donate some money for some great causes.

From this simple and humble beginning there have been five further wonderfully successful BBQ on The Green events. These charities and organisations still desperately need money to do the vital work they do and we are delighted to be able to do our bit.

Sadly Mandy Ross-Read & Kevin Boon have since both passed on, before effective treatment could be found for them. However, they both loved the event and it’s in their honour and memory this essential fundraising continues, in the hope we can help others fair much better with their fight against these awful diseases.

BBQ on the Green, is on the green next to Railway Drive & Charborough Way, Sturminster Marshall BH21 4DH, on Saturday 14th May 11am till Midnight.

We are genuinely so excited to be back with another fine array of live music, from some awesome local bands and some amazing solo & duo performers, who are to be enjoyed with the accompaniment of our fine food and drink options. The event is free to attend! So we hope those that come, indulge (as much as they can) with all that is on offer, as it’s the proceeds of the food the drinks, the raffles, games & stalls etc that goes to the charities. It’s a party, a mini festival, run by the community with the aim of raising money and awareness and to bring us all together in a genuine celebration of life. We have a brilliant time doing this event and enjoying it with everyone who comes along and gets involved.

To date the event has raised over £20,000 for cancer charities.

Our event makes no profits, it only raises money for the charities and it’s only achieved with the incredible generosity of the volunteers, the bands and performers, some generous sponsors and donors, who help with the many other things that going into make the event, our event costs are therefore kept to a bare minimum. We are therefore able to give all the proceeds/profits from the day to the charities we support! So if you can please come and join us and enjoy music and all the rest with us.

We have been from our previous events proud to give many thousands of pounds to Guys & Thomas triple negative breast cancer research and Prostate Cancer UK. We have also been delighted to donate funds to Forest Holme Hospice in Poole, who cared for both Mandy and Kevin with amazing care and dignity.

Again, BBQ on the Green is proud to be back in 2022, Saturday 14th May 2022 on the green adjacent to Railway Drive and Charborough Way BH21 4DH. This year promises to be the biggest and best yet! So please join us for a good cause and for a brilliant day out!

However, if you just can’t make it to the enjoy the day with us and would like to contribute, or you just want to give some money, then please donate here. Many thanks!
